Bolivar, TN | December 16, 2024

Engineer Matthew Graber

Two dedicated firefighters, Engineers Matthew Graber and Tyler Rice, were recently honored with the prestigious title of Firefighter of the Year for their outstanding service and contributions to the Bolivar Fire Rescue Department and their community. Both men exemplify the courage, commitment, and professionalism that define the fire service, despite their differing levels of experience.

With five years of experience, Matthew Graber has become a vital member of the department.  Known for his calm demeanor under pressure, Graber has consistently gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of the public.  Matthew serves as a licensed Emergency Medical Responder for the department in addition to his duties as an engineer.  Graber also serves as the Fire Chief of the Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department.

"Matthew is the kind of firefighter every department hopes for," said Chief Lynn Price. "His dedication to continuing his education and his ability to mentor newer firefighters make him an invaluable asset."

Engineer Tyler Rice

Though relatively new to the profession, Tyler Rice has quickly demonstrated his passion and potential. His enthusiasm for learning and his willingness to take on challenges have made him a standout among his peers.  He joined the department in March 2023 as a volunteer firefighter and was hired as a career firefighter in September 2023.  Rice also serves as a volunteer firefighter for the Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department.

"Tyler’s dedication is evident in everything he does, from training exercises to real-life emergencies,” said Chief Price. Rice received two additional recognitions recently for responding to the most emergency calls while off-duty and having the most emergency responses total.

Despite their different levels of experience, both Graber and Rice share a deep commitment to serving their community. Whether responding to emergencies or helping with community outreach programs, these two firefighters have shown what it means to be true public servants.

The Firefighter of the Year award is a testament to their hard work and dedication. As they continue their careers, both men are expected to achieve even greater success, leaving a lasting impact on their department and the lives of those they protect. This is the first year in the department's history that two firefighters have received the award.
