Council Approves Mayor’s Request to Explore Addition of Sports Complex & Partnership with YMCA

Bolivar, TN | April 11, 2023: During the regularly scheduled meeting of the Bolivar City Council on Monday, April 10, 2023, the city council gave Mayor McTizic the nod to seek funding for a multi-purpose sports complex to be located at West Park in Bolivar.

“I have been working on the idea of a sports complex for our city for years. I appreciate the council’s support in moving toward the next step of the process. A multi-use complex such as this is an investment in our community that will set us apart in the region and will positively impact our city for generations to come,” said Mayor McTizic.

The initial plan for the complex includes a multi-use indoor facility that will house the parks & recreation department, three (3) basketball courts, an indoor batting cage, a walking track, and multipurpose rooms for classes such as dance, karate, and gymnastics. The remainder of the complex will have four (4) baseball fields, three (3) soccer fields, three (3) tennis courts, four (4) pickleball courts, and ample parking. The fields already located at West Park will continue to be utilized. The gymnasium at the Bolivar Municipal Center will be repurposed and will serve as a conference center.

Tonight’s action by the city council allows Mayor McTizic to work with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to explore funding options available to the city which would likely be in the form of bond issuance from the USDA. In addition, the city council approved the exploration of a partnership with the YMCA to host early childhood education classes, child care, indoor swimming, and fitness classes.

“I would like to stress that the action taken by the city council tonight is just the first step in a very lengthy process,” said McTizic. “The estimated cost and terms of the venture will be brought back to the city council for final approval before any further action is taken.”
